stephanie eliza walravens
The day is overcast, the bay barely in sight through the window looking out from the school career advisor's office. Stephanie sits, and the conversation begins:
"You're smart - it would seem. Good grades, good attitude. So, what is it you
want to do?"
"Fashion Design. RMIT."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. Yes, I am sure."
"Well then, drop out! What are you still doing in school? Work in retail, you'll
eventually become a designer, that kind of thing doesn't need a degree. Good day."
If Stephanie Eliza Walravens had one piece of advice, it would be not to take advice.
Hailing from the rugged back beaches of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, Stephanie endeavours to explore and experiment in all aspects of life. She is a story teller by nature, a pilgrim of sorts and will never turn down the opportunity to entertain.
Stephanie's approach to the Bachelor of Design (Fashion) (Honours) has given her a rounded view of the fashion industry. Her most successful studio, Screening Fashion, allowed Stephanie to create a short fashion film, from costumes, storyboarding, casting, lighting, filming and editing; she did it all! This studio opened Stephanie's eyes to the varied mediums that fashion has the ability to work across, and she found a passion for being a part of something much broader in fashion than just clothing. Stephanie was able to create something imaginary, fantastic and bizarre that brought together key elements of her approach to fashion practice. Stephanie's design vocabulary comes through most sincerely in sound, story telling, performance and the immersive visual.
It is the embracing of the mingling of ideas, media and practices that allow Stephanie to carve out her own niche in the fashion industry and to succeed in a time where being interdisciplinary is vital.
