further, more
further, more is a collaborative project comprised of five Fashion (Honours) students completing the Bachelor of Design at RMIT University. All five designers question fashion outcomes through performance, installation, artefact, materiality and film. The nature of fashion, its tactility and relationship with the body allow the viewer to interact, engage and immerse. further, more is part of the 2014 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Curated Program.
Ostranenie - Stephanie Walravens
The defamiliarisation, or ostranenie, of the body within fashion is what my work explores. What we see, feel and hear all play major roles in the way we experience dress. I am using this concept as my muse in the creation of film, performance and object that endeavour to make an audience give a different life to pre-existing clothing.
I’m taking what is familiar. Mundane, daily tasks, sounds, gestures and textures. A bathmat. Safe, comfortable against the body. You feel it when you’re relaxed, nude, vulnerable. A mixing bowl. Homely, you can smell the cookies baking already. But glass, gestures, combined. Working with and against each other. Redefining and defamiliarising the ordinary.
A multi sensory experience is the aim – as a fashion practice to me goes beyond clothing and needs to envelop more senses that create an experience and gives an unfamiliar life to what we put on our bodies.
